At the end of 2003 Orbital was awarded a firm order for two GEO satellites by Sydney, Australia based Optus Networks, Pty. Based on Orbital’s STAR platform, the satellites will provide Ku-band fixed communications and direct television broadcasting services to Australia and New Zealand.
The two new satellites, which will initiate Optus’ D-series of satellites, will carry 24 transponders, with 8 back-up channels also available. The first satellite, known as D1, will generate approximately 4.8 kilowatts of electrical power and is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2005. The second satellite, D2, will generate approximately 6.4 kilowatts and is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2006.

The APCON ASTRO 15 Power Converter is a customer specified multi output DC/DC-Converter, designed and manufactured by APCON, which provides seven output voltages. The power is provided via an unregulated spacecraft power bus. Operating voltage is 30V to 52V (DC). Internal EMI-Filters reduce the conducted emission (CE) and control the Conducted Susceptibility (CS).
More than 95% of the EEE-parts are SMD (surfed mounted devices).
This APCON product uses high-density techniques at very small dimensions.
The unit operates over the full space qualified temperature range.
Features:
Over Voltage Protection
Internal Power Fail Logic
Main/Red Power-Distribution
Frequency operation
Remote sensing
Overload/short circuit protection
Under/over-voltage control logic
Over-temperature protection
Power on reset
On/off-command interfaces for main and redundant bus control
|
The specifications are as follows:
The input circuit is equipped with a 3-stage differential common mode filter to reduce the conducted emission (CE) and to control the conducted susceptibility (CS) in accordance to MIL-STD 462.
Inrush current limit at 2A with fold back characteristic and latch off function. Main and redundant bus interface with on/off control circuit.
